"L&L Lakes" are the work and dream of Murray Langford, who has worked tirelessly for over 50 years to create what you see in this photo, three lakes totaling 125 acres of water, stocked with bass, brim, crappie, catfish, and others...

The lakes are located about 5 miles south of Troy, just north of Springhill. From Troy, turn south off of US 231 and follow AL 87/167 for about five miles and turn right on the dirt road (see green arrow). If you start down the steep hill entering Springhill (with the Dollar Store being the center of Springhill), you've gone too far. Drive down the dirt road about two miles to the Lakes' entrance, a small building on the left (second green arrow).

Lake rules are:

$2.50 per day per person 8 or older (exact change appreciated)
12" miniumum bass limit
No Swimming
Boats are welcome, but motors at IDLE ONLY
No Jet Skis No Hunting

When Murray bought this land with his sister in the early 1960's (hence the name "L&L" for "Langford and Langford"), much of the place had been strip-mined for iron ore. The smallest upper pond is spring-fed year round, and had been used as a "rock washer pond"...where dump trucks poured loads of iron ore-rich soil into a hopper with augers and spray jets that washed sway the dirt, leaving only the iron to haul away. Much of the iron contained fossils of sea-life such as shells, since this area was once the ocean floor (now about 400' in elevation). The red dirt that was washed into the "mud pond" was later dredged up and dumped back where it was excavated from, leaving the area very similar to the surface of Mars. There is very little evidence of this past condition now, as the farm has been gradually smoothed and refined by Murray Langford and crew into these lakes, pasture land, cropland, and forests.

An early morning view across the middle lake.
